About Us

Our WinesFor more than 30 years we have enjoyed sharing a “good red” over dinner. In the early 1990s we set about finding a property to produce our own fine reds. We are now proud to share these with you. Greg, with his keen interest in horticulture, runs the vineyard. Helen is the winemaker, drawing on years of experience as a microbiologist and having graduated in winemaking from the University of Melbourne.

The vineyard was established in 1997, with four hectares under vine. The plantings include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Riesling. It is set amongst the picturesque rolling hills of the Coliban River valley, at the south-west corner of the Heathcote wine region. The site was carefully chosen for its deep granitic soil over a band of clay. In summer the climate is warm but the nights are cool, which is ideal for fully ripening fruit over a longer period to produce elegant wines of intense aroma, colour and flavour, with fine grain tannins. During establishment the vines were irrigated but have been dry grown since 2003. That year the vines struggled a little but every year since, they have looked better than the year before despite the dry conditions over many years. Their roots have developed to find their own water. Each year the crop quality is protected from bird damage by netting the entire vineyard, followed by regular patrols by Lily & Clive, our trusty vineyard dogs.

Our WinesThe wines are entirely estate grown, produced and bottled using traditional methods - hand picked, hand plunged, basket pressed and aged for 12 months in predominantly French oak. The first release was the 2001 Cabernet Merlot which received several bronze medals. The 2002 Cabernet Merlot was awarded a gold medal and the Frangos & Frangos Trophy for “The best Cabernet or Cabernet blend” at the 2003 Daylesford Wine Show. The Coliban Valley 2004 Shiraz was awarded a gold medal and the trophy for the “best wine in the show” amongst a line up of 70 local wines judged by John Ellis at the Kyneton Show. In James Halliday’s 2007 Australian Wine Companion the winery achieved a 5-star rating for the 2004 vintage. The current release 2017 Shiraz and 2019 Rosé were awarded medals at the Heathcote wine show.

The Label is from an original oil painting by friend and artist, Dora McPhee. It depicts the vineyard in Autumn, after harvest, with the evening’s purple sky. All the beautiful old gum trees on the property have been retained, and this tree is in the middle of the vineyard, with the Shiraz and Riesling planted to one side and the Cabernet and Merlot to the other side.

The Cellar Door is CLOSED at the moment and will reopen later in 2022 when we will have more wines available again. It is simple and friendly, in the shed amongst the barrels
